My name is Gary Bennett. I haven’t always been an audiobook narrator. Here’s my story…
Born and raised in California, I’m the oldest of 4 children. At the age of 11 our family relocated to Bozeman, MT, where I spent the next 11 years. After completing high school I attended Montana State University (which, at that time had it’s only campus in Bozeman) and, after 5 years of Top Ramen, all-nighters, the occasional kegger and annual skiing at local Bridger Bowl, I came out on the other side with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (with a Minor in Business Administration).
I jumped right into adulthood and responsibility, landing a job just outside Portland, OR, and began my career as a Control Systems Engineer. The work was challenging and rewarding as I made real-world equipment such as pumps, paper machines and conveyors run automatically via computer control at the click of mouse on a computer screen. I moved from one job to another and did some really cool stuff (like working on the first Delta IV rocket!) and I eventually decided I could continue doing cool stuff while working for myself…so I did. I started my first engineering company in 2004 and loved being my own boss.
I still do the same work under my second engineering company, but near the close of 2017, with my 50th birthday looming in the months ahead, I decided that it was time to also pursue other passions.
I’ve always been a fan of audiobooks, falling in love with the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne (@KevinHearne) and voiced by the incredibly talented Luke Daniels (@luckylukeekul), among many, many others. Inspired by Luke Daniels’ work, and always thinking “what a cool job that would be”, I did some research, bought some equipment, converted my home office into a home recording studio and began finding my voice! Two months later I had three published titles and three other titles in progress, and I’ve never looked back!
